Ready for Reception: How Families and Children Grow Together
Reception is one of the most significant milestones in a child's early life. For many families, the summer before the first day of school brings a mixture of excitement, pride and, if we are honest, a little anxiety. At Peques, we believe that school readiness is not something that begins in the final weeks before children start. It has been quietly building every single day they have been with us.
What school readiness really means
School readiness is not about being able to read or write before the age of five. It is about how a child feels in themselves - whether they can manage a moment of frustration, ask for help when they are unsure, take turns with a peer, or put on their own coat without being prompted. These are the foundations Reception teachers rely on, and they are the foundations we have been building in Indigos from day one.
How we build readiness every day
In the Indigos room, children practise self-care and independence as part of their natural routine - serving their own meals, managing their belongings, washing their hands and dressing themselves. We hold daily group times where every child is encouraged to speak, to listen and to feel that their voice matters. We introduce simple mindfulness moments using the Whole Brain Posture to help children recognise and express how they are feeling, building the emotional vocabulary they will need throughout their school years.
Physical development is woven into every session. Before a child can hold a pencil with confidence, they need strong arms, stable shoulders and good body coordination - all of which we develop through climbing, balancing, mark-making and movement. We also build the social skills that classroom life depends on: taking turns, working alongside a partner and resolving disagreements with increasing independence.
The transition belongs to the whole family
Starting school is not only a milestone for the child. It is a transition for every adult who loves them - parents, carers, grandparents, whoever has been there at the nursery door each morning. And here is something we have learnt from years of supporting families through this moment: a calm, confident adult makes a calm, confident child. Children are extraordinarily tuned in to the feelings of the people they trust. When the adults around them hold this change with warmth and quiet assurance, children borrow that steadiness and carry it with them.
It is completely natural to feel a pull of emotion as this chapter closes. We encourage you to acknowledge those feelings, share them with someone you trust, and then make a conscious choice about the story you tell your child. Words like "you are so ready for this" and "your new teacher is going to love you" shape how a child approaches something new. Anxiety is contagious, and so is confidence.
What you can do at home
Alongside your own emotional preparation, there is a great deal you can do practically to help your child feel ready. Encourage them to manage small things independently at home - putting on their shoes, tidying their space, pouring their own drink. Talk positively about school and what is coming, using the name of their teacher where you know it. Walk past the school together or practise the journey so it becomes familiar before the first day. Look at photographs of the classroom or playground. Encourage your child to ask questions and express any worries, and share those worries with us so we can support them here too.
Consistent sleep and a calm morning routine make an enormous difference. For children of this age, going to bed at a regular time and waking with enough time to get ready without rushing sets the tone for the whole day. Limiting screen time and encouraging mealtimes with conversation also support the kind of attention and readiness that school requires.
If your child has any additional needs - whether confirmed, suspected or simply something you have noticed - please share this with us and with their new school as early as possible. Early communication allows Reception teams to put the right support in place from the very first day. At Peques, we will work with you to agree consistent strategies between home and nursery so your child arrives feeling secure and understood.
We are here with you
This is a partnership, and it has always been. Everything we do in Indigos is designed to give your child the inner resources to step into Reception with their head held high. And everything you do at home - the conversations, the encouragement, the calm send-off at the gate - reinforces that work in ways no nursery session can replicate. When the adults in a child's life are prepared, the child feels it.
If you have any questions about your child's transition, we would love to hear from you. Speak to your child's key person or get in touch with the team directly. For those who are not yet part of the Peques community and would like to find out more about how we prepare children for the next stage of their journey, we warmly welcome visits. Places are limited and siblings are given priority, but we are always happy to talk.
